PROFESSIONAL VISIT TO THE ALUMINIUM PLANT PODGORICA

The Engineering Chamber of Montenegro successfully organized a professional visit to the Aluminium Plant Podgorica, held on May 28, 2026, as part of the 2026 Professional Development Programme. The topic of the visit was “Installation of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) at the Aluminium Plant Podgorica.”

During the visit, participants had the opportunity to learn more about hazardous substances, with a particular focus on gases and cryogenic materials, as well as the operating principles, safety procedures and protection measures applied at the CNG and LNG gas terminal.

In the theoretical part of the lecture, lecturer Petar Dragojević spoke about the importance of proper management of hazardous substances. He pointed out that there are currently more than six million different substances in the world, over 3,800 of which are classified as hazardous. He particularly emphasized their dual nature — on the one hand, they have an important and wide application in industry, energy, pharmaceutical production and other fields, while on the other hand, if not handled properly, they can pose a serious risk to human health and the environment.

Participants were also introduced to internationally standardized labels and marking systems for hazardous substances, which enable their recognition across different countries and play an important role in the safe storage, transport and handling of chemicals and gases.

Special attention was given to the properties of ammonium nitrate and its use in industry, including the pyrotechnic and explosives industries. It was emphasized that improper use or combination of these substances may pose a significant safety risk, which is why strict compliance with prescribed protection, control and handling measures is necessary.

Following the theoretical part, a tour of the plant and gas terminal was organized. On this occasion, Milovan Janković and Radivoje Radinović presented practical protection measures and safety procedures applied when handling CNG and LNG systems.
